Tuwat Oasis, 1324, Evening
The hajj has still been going pretty well. I miss my family back in Timbuktu, but I comfort myself with the fact that I will be back soon. Although I took up Islam as my religion just to be able to go on this hajj and learn about it, these days I have started to actually believe in it. It seems like this might be the religion I keep for the rest of my life, so it might be a good thing that I am going on this journey for non-educational reasons as well. First of all, the burden of taking this long trip will be gone once I am back. Also, I shall be giving generously as the Qur'an states needs to be done. Unfortunately though, I shall not be able to give behind the scene like the Qur'an asks for, since a crowd of sixty-thousand people is sure to attract attention. On top of that, I am also following our holy book and being aware of the good I shall be doing. Therefore, a lot of the five pillars of Islam is going to be fulfilled in this journey.
Other than that, I am really happy that we are in the Tuwat Oasis. Although it will really be interesting to write about the desert in my book, the journey ahead of us doesn't seem to be very pleasant. However, for now I am at the front of the caravan, which is why I am able to take the luxury to write in this and my other book. The water here is ten times better than what it was a Tagbaza, so that is a plus-point. Just to be safe, I am packing along two pretty big jugs of water that shall be tied onto the camels. In the extreme case of getting lost, the people around me and I will have some fresh water to drink. Seeing me, others are doing the same as well. Well, I am now going to take a little break from this journal and start the second chapter of my book!
